Tankless Water Heater Upgrades

Upgrading from a tank to tankless means hot water that doesn't run out, a lower gas bill, and the floor space your old tank took up. A tankless unit heats water only when a tap opens, so you stop paying to keep 50 gallons hot all day.

The unit itself is the easy part. A tankless upgrade works well when it's sized to your home's peak demand, gets enough gas, and is vented correctly. That's where most of the job, and most of the price difference between quotes, comes from.

Most of the upgrades we do around North County use Navien, Rinnai or Rheem condensing units. We also replace older tankless units that have reached the end of their life.

• In-home sizing based on your bathrooms, fixtures and household size
• Gas line check, and upsizing when the existing line is too small
• New venting to manufacturer specs, plus a condensate drain on condensing units
• Isolation valves so the unit can be flushed every year
• City permit and inspection
• Removal and disposal of your old tank

What it costs

Most tankless upgrades in North County run $2,200–$4,500 installed. The low end is a swap with an adequate gas line and a short vent run. The high end usually means a gas line upgrade, a long vent run, or moving the unit to a new spot.
