Water Heater Rebates in San Diego (2026): What's Actually Still Available
For years, the first thing I told anyone thinking about a new water heater was to check the rebates first. In 2026, the honest answer is different: there is a lot less money available than there used to be, and most of what's left is aimed at one type of water heater.
Here's where things stand for Oceanside and North County San Diego homeowners.
The Federal Tax Credit Has Ended
The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Section 25C) used to cover 30% of the cost of a qualifying water heater. That credit was ended by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed in July 2025. Water heaters installed after December 31, 2025 do not qualify.
If yours was installed in 2025 or earlier and you haven't filed for that tax year yet, you may still be able to claim it on that year's return. Talk to your tax preparer.
Utility Rebates Now Focus on Heat Pump Water Heaters
California's utility-funded rebate programs have shifted toward electric heat pump water heaters (sometimes called hybrid water heaters). These are the units most current San Diego-area incentives are built around.
- Heat pump water heaters: Rebates are available through statewide programs that SDG&E customers can use. Amounts depend on the program, what you're replacing, and whether funding is still open.
- Income-qualified households: May be eligible for larger incentives, and in some cases no-cost installation through SDG&E's assistance programs.
- Gas tankless and gas tank units: Generally not eligible for the current heat pump programs. Occasional gas-appliance rebates come and go, but don't count on one when budgeting.
Rebate programs open, pause and run out of funding throughout the year. Always check sdge.com for what is available when you're ready to buy, and read the fine print. Many programs require the rebate to be reserved before installation.
Is a Heat Pump Water Heater Right for Your Home?
Heat pump water heaters are very efficient, but they aren't a drop-in replacement for every gas heater. They need:
- A dedicated 240-volt electrical circuit, which may mean electrical work
- Enough surrounding air space to work efficiently, which rules out some tight closets
- A place to drain condensate
In a garage with power nearby, they can be a good option. In a small interior closet, a gas tankless unit is often more practical. We'll tell you which fits your home during the estimate.
So What Should You Do?
- Price the job without rebates first. Make the decision on the real installed cost and the unit's long-term operating cost.
- Treat any rebate as a bonus, not the reason to choose a unit.
- Check program rules before installing if you do want a heat pump water heater, since some require pre-approval.
